Under Construction
the Arc
The arc is seldom straight,
But may hold the heaven high,
Bridge the chasm low and deep,
Support the greatest edifice,
Refresh with flowing aqueduct.
Or on its back,
It serves us morning meal,
Contains the lake and sea,
Floats upon the wave
And saves us from the deep.
With energy crackling or silently exchanged,
It sparks across the gap between
The souls that wander 'bout their ways.
It spans the globe from here to there, at all the latitudes,
Connects the dots and cities proud
(dispersed though they may be).
It wraps the earth in colored bow,
When darkened clouds have passed,
and repeats the promise to the eye
That looks beyond the sky.
Under and above the arc,
We journey round a'round.
Hope too easy or too hard
For peace or love or rest,
Perhaps to know just how we're blest.
